Crash Claims Retired Ice Dancer Turned Lawyer Alexandra Paul

Canadian ice dancer and 2014 Olympian Alexandra Paul was killed in a seven vehicle crash on August 22nd in Melancthon Township, an hour southwest of Barrie. Paul’s 10-month-old son, Charles, was in the vehicle. He was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. 

Three occupants of other vehicles were injured in the crash. A 67-year-old-man was airlifted to hospital. A 45-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were both treated at a local hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Paul’s ice dancer partner was Mitch Islam. They met in 2009 and were quick to succeed. After winning the 2010 Canadian Junior Championships, they capped off the season with a silver medal at the 2010 World Junior Championships. 

A couple off the ice, Paul and Islam won three senior bronze medals at the Canadian Championships (2011, 2014, 2015). In 2014, they made the Canadian Olympic team.

Paul and Islam retired mid-season in 2016. They married in 2021 and welcomed a son, Charles, in 2022. 

Paul finished a Bachelor of Arts in 2017, then she obtained her Juris Doctor degree from Windsor Law in 2020. She joined Barriston Law in 2021 as an associate lawyer in corporate and real estate, and wills and estates.

Paul and Islam trained out of the Mariposa School of Skating in Barrie, Ont. until 2012. They relocated to the Detroit Skating Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In 2015, Paul and Islam returned to Canada and trained at the Gadbois Centre in Montreal, Que., under Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon.
